You have probably used artificial intelligence today without even thinking about it. Maybe you asked ChatGPT a question, used an AI-powered search engine, watched a video recommended to you, or used an app that automatically generated or edited something for you. AI is becoming such a normal part of everyday life, but there is an important question we should be asking: Can we actually trust it?
The answer is complicated.
AI can be incredibly useful. It can help students understand difficult topics, help people organize information, assist businesses, and make everyday tasks faster. However, AI is not perfect. It can provide incorrect information, reflect biases in the data that it was trained on, or present an answer with too much confidence. This can make it difficult to recognize when something is wrong.
One of the biggest problems is that AI does not always know when it is wrong. Generative AI systems can sometimes produce information that sounds completely reasonable but is actually inaccurate. This is often referred to as an “AI hallucination.” The problem isn’t necessarily that AI makes mistakes, as humans make mistakes too. The problem is that AI can make those mistakes sound really convincing.
This becomes especially important when people use AI for information they would normally expect to be accurate. If someone asks AI for help understanding a homework assignment, a mistake might be relatively easy to catch. But what happens when someone relies on AI for news, financial information, legal questions, or other important decisions?
This is where AI literacy becomes extremely important.
Being AI literate does not mean knowing how to build an AI system or understand complicated computer science principles. It means knowing how to use AI responsibly and think critically. Instead of automatically accepting AI-generated answers, people need to be willing to ask questions like where did this information come from? Could it be biased? Is there another source that confirms it? Does the answer actually make sense?
AI policy plays an important role in these questions as well. AI is becoming increasingly common in governments, schools, and companies, as they are having to decide how AI should be used and what responsibilities organizations should have when AI systems cause problems. Issues such as privacy, copyright, bias, transparency, and misinformation are not just technical problems; they affect real people. For students, AI policy can influence how AI is allowed to be used in classrooms, how student information is protected, and what counts as responsible use of AI for schoolwork. These policies can help students understand where AI can be useful without replacing their own learning or judgment. For local communities, AI policy matters because it is not limited to schools. It can affect how people interact with businesses, access information, protect their personal data, and recognize misleading or AI-generated content. As AI continues to become part of everyday life, communities need to understand not only how to use it, but also how decisions about AI can affect them.
At the same time, this does not mean that we should simply stop using AI. AI can be used as a valuable tool when people understand its limitations and use it responsibly. The goal should not necessarily be to decide whether AI is simply “good” or “bad.” Instead, we should learn how to use it thoughtfully.
As AI becomes more common, knowing how to question an AI-generated answer may become just as important as knowing how to find one. The future of AI should not be blindly trusting technology or completely rejecting it. It should be about finding a balance between using AI’s capabilities and recognizing when human judgment still matters.
So, can we trust AI?
Maybe, but we shouldn’t trust it blindly.
